As I turned into the driveway to face the cottage my eyes moved beyond it to focus on the cool lake waters. I imagined how refreshing it would be to plunge my steaming body into the chilly water. I followed my inclination, striping off my socks and shoes and ran into the lake up to my thighs. That’s when I realized how cold my feet were. I hesitated, unsure this truly sounded like a good idea anymore, asking myself whether the discomfort of the cold water was worth the goal of refreshment.
It took a few minutes for my body to adjust to the cooler environment around me before I felt comfortable. In the same way the changes of life bring us discomfort. When God first calls us to move into a new season of life initially we might run toward it because we have a vision of what could be ahead, but as soon as we enter the change we get cold feet, wanting to turn back because it isn’t comfortable.
Just recently my family felt the Lord leading us to a new church family. It was something we had been praying about for years. Finally, we had the peace that God was releasing us from our old church. I was excited with the new possibilities. But after a few weeks at the new place I got cold feet, wanting to turn back. I didn’t realize how hard it would be to make new friends, and to connect with a new body of believers. But I could see the goal of where God is taking my family in this new place and I need to keep on even if it isn’t comfortable.
Are you entering a new season? Perhaps something you have anticipated for a long time? Don’t let your cold feet cause you to turn back. God is doing a good work in you and if you stay in your comfort zone you may miss experiencing His plan for you.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
