Laundry piles grow
Children need to be fed
Three times a day or more!
Crumbs fall
Juice spills
Dust gathers
And I clean, and clean, and clean
My temper rises at their thoughtlessness
My indignation grows at their ignorance
Don’t you see me here? Why don’t you help?
Harsh words flow from my mouth
Little mouths tremble, eyes grow wide, brows furrow and teens skulk away
And then I am ashamed
--apologies
And yet, the next day, the cycle repeats
And repeats
The endlessness of my mundane chores press in on me, and I feel defeated
What is the point?
Everything is meaningless, meaningless
And yet I must go on, for the sake of my children and my life, I must go on
But there is no joy, no zest, no vitality
All is flat
My spirit is deflated
Until one day, Jesus calls me close
“Everything you do, do it for Me”
“Work with joy, for My sake”
“Whatever you do, do it for Me”
My heart is touched
I am convicted
The scales fall off
I can see!
God is in all things
And He sees me
And loves me
And my work today brings glory to God
In His time, He will be glorified
And so, I smile and am grateful for the crumbs on the counter
The dust on the floor
The socks in the corner
The chores are no longer onerous
For with Christ on my mind,
there’s a smile on my face and joy in my heart
I will serve the Lord
