“What will you choose?” the assistant asked
the happy little boy,
who blurted out that he would like
a bright, shiny, new, red toy.
“There’s quite a choice here on this shelf,
a bright red gun, a fire truck, shiny motor boats,
a big red ball, red speedy cars,
and a truck that even floats.”
Jimmy’s mind was spinning fast,
His eyes were shining brightly,
“Come, come” the smiling assistant said,
“make your choice boy and be sprightly.”
His mother squeezed his tiny hand,
“Don’t dally Jimmy, time to make a choice.”
But poor Jimmy’s mind was so befuddled,
that he couldn’t find his voice.
He deliberated and procrastinated
picking up each shiny toy,
when suddenly another pushed right past him,
A second happy, little boy.
He chose the fire truck and ball,
The gun and motor boat,
Then gave his money to the man,
From his bright, red, shiny coat.
“Woe is me!” cried Jimmy,
Slowness has been my folly,
and so I know because of this,
those toys will make him jolly.”
Jimmy led his mother to a sign
hanging high upon the wall.
He had to bend his head right back,
for Jimmy wasn’t very tall.
It read:
If you want a bright, red toy,
make sure you’re quick to choose,
or another will come along,
and you will surely lose.
The second little boy was listening,
and stepped up close to Jim,
and kindly handed out a boat and ball,
to please and pacify him.
The mother reached into her purse,
overwhelmed with relief and joy,
and decided right there on the spot
to buy every bright, red, shiny toy.
This is a happy ending,
for the boy who was too late,
but best to quickly dive right in
and never hesitate.
