August 2nd:
Bags packed to bursting point. They need to supply labels, saying ‘open at own risk’. Perhaps I should draw a party popper on the label with cloths exploding out of it.
Two cases for five people – all because crazy carriage charges.
Taxi booked and rechecked three times. They must have me down as a nutter.
This is our first foreign family holiday we have ever had.
Normally, we stay at caravans or budget half-board accommodation. But not this time. The Jones’ are going on holiday.
August 3rd:
6am Taxi here, all out.
We all cram in and moan about the lack of room. Is this Sardine Cabs?
My youngest is on a portable seat with bags on her lap. The two cases just fitted in. Thankfully, it was a short trip to airport.
The cheek of the driver, charging extra for sitting in the boot! I'm paying half and will inform the council.
Please God, let this holiday get better!
12noon Typical! Flight delayed over two hours; family frustrated, we should be landing by now.
I angrily asked the flight staff, “have you ever dealt with a bored, frustrated four-year-old? You will now!”
For the whole flight, we had free food and drinks and toys in abundance. I think they took my warning seriously. We did thank the crew when we left.
6pm Now this is what I call holiday. No baggage lost, coach to hotel comfortable. Finally, suncream on and sprawled out on sun lounger. Bliss!
August 4th
My dearest diary, just spent a wonderful day out with my family.
So happy! The icing on the cake, managed to book a bungee jump for next week.
For years have loved watching others on TV doing it. Now it’s my turn (busy doing a happy dance)!
August 5th:
Day three of our holiday and stomach feeling sore, must not overdo the gorgeous deserts on offer.
3pm feeling worse. Pain has moved to lower right hand side, husband sobered up. I think he is truly afraid. He must love me or afraid he's going to have look after the three girls.
5pm......
August 6th:
Day four. Just came around, the nursing staff told me what happened.
Seems I was rushed with all flashing lights to St. Egberts Hospital with a suspected burst appendix.
Feel ashamed at getting a child's condition at my age. Thank the Lord, it had not ruptured.
10am was offered ice cream and couldn't face it. I just want my own bed, but 1200 miles from home.
1pm just had the kids turn up, all looking worried. I had to comfort the youngest.
The 9-year-old is trying to act older but the cracks of emotion were showing though. Feel so helpless lying here. Cried for ages after they left.
I should be their comforter and support! I hate being so useless.
Feel slightly better, lovely husband has taken kids to water park.
I think he misses the help and support.
It's not funny but I had to laugh, he is learning how hard looking after three girls is.
August 7th:
Day five. Ran out of magazines to read, even taken up Sudoko. Getting rather good at it.
I always had a flare for numbers, take after my Dad.
August 8th:
Day 6 Getting out tomorrow. Thankfully still have another week of holiday.
As a family, we have decided to make the most of the remainder of the time here.
Shame no physical activities, there was me wanting to try bungee jumping. My poor husband cried off going in my place.
August 9th:
Finally back with my family. Such relief!
A week ago, I thought death was knocking at my door. All I have to show for the ordeal is a small scar and some stitches.
Back on the sun lounger, but not going into the water. Shame!
I put my diary down and lovingly look at my husband.
"Husband dearest, any chance you can find me one of those gorgeous deserts?"
