I had an idea, a hope, and a memory.
It floated up from the dark recesses of my mind to surface, exposing itself, and then…gone.
Visible for only a second, then poof!
Just like a dream at the edge of awakening, lurking, taunting my recollection. Then the cobwebs of sleep fled with the alarm clock shattering any lingering phrase.
Try as I might, it scurried away leaving me helpless.
I know it was brilliant. Oh, why did I not arise? I’ll remember it, for sure, I thought.
Saul Bellow once said, ‘You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.” Well, I won’t know now.
Lost, lost forever.
Wait! What was that? It returned for a second. Grasp it!
Too late.
I close my eyes, trying to sink into the depths of the netherworld, to no avail.
Maybe later, I’ll remember.
It drifts to and fro as a butterfly, in and out…never landing.
A word, a phrase, no!
There it goes again like a tethered horse galloping away with its first taste of freedom.
Elusive thought, come back! I’ll write you down, I promise.
Oh, woe is me!
“God is found not in the wind nor in the earthquake nor in the fire…but in a still, small voice.” 1 Kings 19:11-12 KJV
Oh God, bring back to my mind what Your Spirit wants me to say, write, or do…anything!
