Soft, supple, smooth skin has been replaced by a myriad of wrinkles, spots, and crow’s feet.
Eyelashes that were once full and long are now sparse and thin.
Is that a black hair on my upper lip? Grab the tweezers!
Gray green eyes peer back at me under sagging lids. The puffy dark circles cannot be masked even with the best foundation.
My forehead looks like a washboard and where did those jowls come from? I’m sure they weren’t there yesterday.
Yesterday.
My youth passed away even though I kept watch daily. I was just twenty last week, wasn’t I?
The other day, as I was running down the hall to get the phone, my boss said, ‘Don’t you know you’re over sixty?’ Another time, ‘You shouldn’t be climbing ladders at your age!’
But I don’t feel old, not even middle-aged. Sure I have aches and pains. It’s hard to get up off the floor sometimes and doctor’s visits get weird with questions like, ‘Do you feel safe at home?’ Only if I avoid the full-length mirror!
I think they made tunics and leggings just for my generation. Hide the rolls and fake the youthful skinny legs. I’m sure I have the look of a youthful middle-ager with my dyed head of below-the-shoulder curls.
With time everything starts to deteriorate. My pastor said that our bodies are tents and sometimes they leak or tear because they aren’t permanent residences for our souls. We wear out. He got that right.
Here I am, in my bathroom, contemplating fading looks…and life.
Where did I go? This face isn’t mine. The body is thirty-five pounds heavier.
I did get my bunions fixed two years ago… bunions? What about this colonoscopy thing…who can be excited about that? Someone said if you can remember rotary dial phones, it’s time for your prep.
The gall-bladder quit working so out it went, too.
Senior discounts are a perk. The only thing is that eating out to get a discount doesn’t compare with the hidden fats and salts that show up on the bathroom scale!
So where did this young girl disappear to? Why is her body old but her spirit young?
Oh, there I am. I see myself in my son and granddaughters…gray green eyes. I will live on through them and enjoy the legacy of my life.

Truth be told, although we have noticeably aged on the outside, the Spirit is still intact and as beautiful as ever, as are you!
Lovely entertaining and great powerful message, I can see this scoring well with the judges.
Well done,
Blessings~
