I rolled my head sideways, trying not make my old mattress squeak. Blazing red against the night, the digital clock read 12:30. 'Half past midnight. Everyone should be asleep by now.' I held my breath, listening to the steady rhythm of my brother Ryan’s inhale, exhale. He loved Oreos as much as I did, but he was a snitch. In fact, all eight of us children loved Oreos. It was a genetic flaw handed down to us from our mother. The irony. The very woman who refused to satisfy my gluttony, was the one who’d planted it there in the first place.
My heart beat faster when I started to creep from my bed. As I tiptoed, I accidentally bumped a squeaky rocking chair. I paused and glanced back at Ryan. Sleeping like a neglected computer. I tiptoed to the bedroom door, which I’d left cracked earlier for an easy exit. I slipped through silently, and ducked into the kitchen with expert stealth.
Crouched in a shadowed corner, I surveyed the kitchen. Everything was still, but then I heard a crinkling sound. My eyes shot to the top of the fridge where the Oreos were stashed. Part of a human silhouette shown against the moonlight. One of my brothers had beat me to it.
Jealousy boiled in my veins as I realized I was no longer a thief, but a rat. “Caught’cha!” I yelled as I sprang for the light switch. My mouth dropped open when I realized it wasn’t one of my brothers.
“Mom?” There she was, standing on a chair, an Oreo in her mouth, two in her left hand, and her right still probing the package. She had that deer in the headlights look as she tried to smile, but the Oreo got in her way. “I guess the Oreo doesn’t roll far from the factory, huh?” I said as I walked toward her.
She chuckled, and I saw my opportunity. Holding out my hand, I asked, “Can I have a few?” She looked me over for a few seconds, then dropped three Oreos in my hand.
'Success! Sweet, dark, round success.'
