The lecture her mother had given her just a week before came flooding back.
“Focus! Be aware of your surroundings! Fight back!
Mom was a high school teacher and didn’t want her daughter facing the same nightmarish predicament as some of her other students. It was also the reason Abby wasn’t allowed to date until she was sixteen.
Abby touched her neck and felt the sticky blood where her collar cut into her neck. “Oh God, help me!” she prayed.
Her date’s hands began ripping at her tight jeans and she looked around for help “This is what I get for sneaking out on a date?” she thought horrified, “for lying…”
Mom’s warning continued playing in her head, “Fight back! Most attackers are cowards looking for an easy prey. You are a tiny girl, rapists will think you are an easy mark.”
Abby had been so proud to be asked out by a senior! She flinched as his hand slid between her legs, “Stop! I don’t want to do this!” Her date ripped at her jeans and the silver button gave way. Abby screamed,”Please stop!” She felt like a terrified little girl.
“Don’t give up Abby!” a voice said. She looked at her date and wondered if he'd heard it too when the voice said, “Listen Abby... fight back.”
Just yesterday she thought this boy was cute! She felt her zipper give and scratched at his arm before feeling the back of his hand slam against her cheek. Tasting blood in her mouth she cried out, her tongue running across her split lip.
“Pull your feet up onto the seat. Use your feet, fight back!” Listening to the voice, she pulled her feet up onto the leather seat, turned her back against the door and pushed him away from her with all her strength.
She felt his soft flesh give beneath her penny-loafers and began to kick. She heard him curse and moan as each kick made its mark. While he was holding his ribs she tried the door handle and realized he’d locked the car doors.
“Unlock the door Abby!” The gentle voice in her head continued, “Just pull up on the lock and open the door!”
As he grabbed for her foot, she kicked again making contact.
“You crazy *&%*#!” He swore as she pulled up on the long skinny lock behind her and opened the door falling out onto the gravel parking lot.
“Now run Abby; don’t look back!” the voice persisted, “Run… now!” For a moment she wondered if this was a nightmare where she'd find her feet lodged in molasses, and was surprised her trembling legs could still run.
She took off toward the concession stand at the end of the old Drive-In and slipped through the door that read, “employees only” before hiding under the Formica counter-top.
Where were the employees? Why wasn’t anyone working?
“Hey Kiddo” an old woman bent over to see the child hiding under the counter, “You can’t be in here. Didn’t you see the sign?”
“Please…just call my mother, please…don’t make me go! He…”
An old woman with an Auntie Em bun scanned the torn clothing and feared the worst. “Okay Darlin’, I’ll call your Momma for you.”
Abby’s mother arrived and wrapped her arms around her girl before asking gently, “Did he hurt you?”
Taking a deep breath she replied, “He tried to… but I think I hurt him more. Mom… it was like you were there with me, I did what you said; I fought back!” Tears ran down her mother’s face, for she was thankful she’d taken the time to warn her daughter.
Abby continued, “It was like someone else was in the car with me, showing me a way out. I’m sorry I lied.”
“It looks like your Guardian Angel was on duty tonight?”
“Do you really believe that stuff?”
“Don’t you?” Her mother questioned.
Abby thought about the guiding voice and nodded, “Yah, I guess I do.”
Her mother patted her arm lovingly and asked, “You know you are grounded for a month right?” Laughter, sobs and tears all mingled together with the relief that she was safe.
