WHERE WERE YOU

I was sixteen years old when the most important event in my life happened. Well it wasn’t really my life, and it didn’t effect me in a direct way, but it was an event in history that you recall where, when, and what you were doing at the time.

There are many things that happen over the course of ones life that stand out as pivot points. In my fifty plus years I have been around for nine presidents, four popes, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the deaths of Elvis, John Lennon, and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. I’m old enough to remember black and white television, eight track tapes, and typewriters. I have stood on the brink of a civilization that moved forward into the information age with the advent of computers, and man soaring into space, and most recently the attack on American soil with the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Which of these many events, and I’m sure I left some out, stand out for you? Like I said the one that stands out for me took place when I was sixteen, the day after my sixteenth birthday as a matter of fact. I always wished that it had actually happened on my birthday, but such was not the way of history. Not like the end of the Korean War that I understand did happen on the day I was born.

We had a family reunion on my mother’s side of the family, and everyone gathered at Grandma and Grandpa’s home that was located near a lake with camping cabins. It was a really fun time for everyone, except maybe my brother Bill who ended up with poisoned ivy and didn’t do much more than itch as he was covered in that cream.

But on that historic day everyone was gathered around the television set in my Uncle Sonny and Aunt Carol’s cabin. It was only black and white, but it didn’t matter we were watching history take place. The hatch opened and the first man descended the ladder. It may have looked a bit clumsy as he made his way down to the surface that was at least an inch deep in gray powder. We held our breaths as we waited for that first foot to step on the surface, and what would be said that would forever go down in history. We watched and waited until that moment when everyone cheered wildly, TV anchors wiped their eyes and quoted the quote that would go down in history. “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The day: July 20, 1969. The location: The surface of the moon. Who: Neal Armstrong, the first civilian astronaut.

We had made it to the moon, and if the moon, then there is nothing that we cannot do if we put our minds to it. Someday there will be another history making event, and again we will know where we were when we heard about it. The biggest history making event that I look forward to is the rapture of the church. I won’t have to worry about where I will be on that glorious day. How about you? Will you remember where you were when the world changed? Or will you be with our Lord in heaven. Be a part of history don’t let history be a part of you.
