She turned the corner and briefly looked up.
Sink or swim. Sue read the graffiti on the side-wall of the café.
Impulsively, she decided she deserved some comfort in the form of sugar. She paid for the gelatine sweets and immediately opened the packet. It didn’t take her long to eat it all.
She sauntered on to the Library.
Upon entering the building, she felt her soul soothed. This was her sacred place; for Sue it offered tranquillity, inspiration and wisdom. The books were waiting for a mind to reach out, and yet, this morning she didn’t.
Sink or swim. The words stayed with her, so very apt of the happenings of the past few days.
Peter was fortunate…no sink or swim ultimatum for him. A strong hand reached out and caught him. (Matthew 14:30-31)
Sink or swim…Peter…he called out…believed, had faith, he trusted…and Jesus. Sue pondered on the subject.
She reached into the pocket of her well-worn grey and white casual jacket for a tissue. She took the Woman’s Weekly from the shelf and sat down in the only upholstered chair, pretending to read.
It is easy to sink, to just let go…and why should I not?
“Because you are stronger than you think, that is why.” The words popped into her mind.
It is so hard to just stay afloat, always just stay afloat. When will it end?
“It will end when you sink…but you are strong and if you stay buoyant a little longer you will get through this. Trust Me.” Again, The Voice.
A while later, Sue wiped her cheeks, applied a fresh coat of lipstick and headed home.
She felt refreshed after a warm scented, filled to the brim bath.
Mother would have said: you can swim in it, it’s so full. Sue smiled at the memory.
Sue’s British Shorthaired cat, Mosey, rubbed against her leg. She bent down and picked her up. She briefly hugged her, put her down as she headed for the kitchen.
Holding her teacup and saucer in one hand, and her Bible clutched in the other, she cosied up in front of the window overlooking the lake.
As always, when feeling troubled, Sue recited Psalm 23 and The Lords’ Prayer.
She opened her Bible to Romans 12. Her eye caught verse 12: “Rejoicing in hope; [be] patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer”
She read Matthew 14:29-31. Peter was walking on water.
She prayed Proverbs 7:4 “Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman”,
In addition, she prayed Proverbs 8:14. “Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.”
As the apostle Paul encouraged us all, with perseverance through prayer. She prayed for strength and divine guidance.
1 Corinthians 14:15 ”What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.”
1 Thessalonians 5:17 “Pray without ceasing.”
Her countenance changed, she started to sing, knowing God to be on her side.
Sue started preparing her defense in the unfair dismissal case against her.
She persevered; she stayed buoyant, and held her head high; she reached the other side. She was rewarded with what the law allowed.
1 Thessalonians 5:16 “Rejoice evermore.”
Shortly afterwards she received an offer to help others in a similar position.

She was rewarded for her adversity and can now pass on her blessings.
