It is innate in every human being to search for a reason for their own existence. Since the dawn of man, in the minds of our earliest, ancient tribes we have dreamed up names for Deities and created "Gods" to assist us with our understanding of the forces of nature. Throughout history, men have freely accepted the presence of a divine reason and some semblance of cosmic order to the happenings within our universe. By applying an identity to their perceived ruler and in the telling of that "Gods" tale, a happy resignation was achieved in the individual’s soul. It mattered not that their names and stories were invented in the absence of true knowledge, to fill the need of a convenient, if not misguided truth. We simply needed to believe in something!
I believe in Christ and the story of his life with all my heart and soul, but I understand that the coming of Christ was the fulfillment of an unintentional spiritual evolution. When he came he gave us the real story of a man. A life of good deeds as a tangible and glorious example to those aspiring to live a "good" life. I believe that those who have been blessed with the presence of Jesus in our lives, are duty bound to expose our frightened and hope deprived brothers and sisters to the everlasting love and freedom that is the reward for welcoming Jesus into our hearts.
The majority of "non-believers" have, for several reasons, lost faith in organized religion. The acts of the few have tarnished the many. It is sad, but this is the reality of today's age. It is the elephant in the room that no one appears to be addressing. I contend that we must adopt an entirely new method of spreading the joyous word of Christ. We must live by example each and every one of us. We must forgive all hurts, we must through our everyday deeds, inspire those around us to question their understanding of our universe and its origins. We must encourage them ever so gently, to begin their own spiritual evolution. For it is obvious now that the first step on the road to finding Christ is the personal awakening of one’s soul.
Only then can one begin to figure out how to ask the right questions. To be empowered to reach for a new level of understanding having taken that first step of realizing that, regardless of any further understanding, to possess the genuine courage to step outside their indoctrinated and defeatist mind set and accept they "have a soul", is to welcome an entirely new realm of possibilities. Their hope is kindled, they will begin to ask more questions. They will make mistakes, they may proceed down many wrong paths but I believe they will eventually find Christ of their own understanding. He is with us all, just waiting for us to ask him into our lives. It is inevitable that as their hearts and minds become more open, the power of Christ will lead them to him. We must have faith in that.
We must step away from the "come to church" mentality and find a way to reach them in their homes. How can this be done you ask? Only by the doing of deeds so great, they demand public attention. Inspiring deeds of great charity and forgiveness. We must make plain to them our joy in giving, knowing that Christ will provide us with everything we need to do his work.
Essentially, instead of continually telling them what will happen if they don't believe, we must show them the love to be found when they do!
They don't need to be any more frightened, they need to be inspired!
