“Is it because I am older?” I ask myself. I believe that modesty is important to the Father. He was quite specific and detailed about priestly garments. Paul writes to Timothy* that “women are to dress in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control.” { I Tim 2:9} This verse implies more than appearance. Self-control suggests behavior that is moderated by wisdom and by the Holy Spirit.{Gal 5:23}.
I am embarrassed by women’s attire because in our new found freedoms I do not think that we women should dress provocatively and in such a way as to attract attention to ourselves.
“Am I being judgmental?” I ponder to myself.
Recently I saw a well-known Christian preacher teaching on a popular TV station and I was shocked by what she wore. "Narrow-minded; I do not think so."
I wish to ask a question. “If one has priceless treasures, are they displayed for all to gaze at ?” The precious priceless displayed in museums are securely encased and guarded. If they are left unguarded, they will be stolen or defaced and that indicates the low value that the owner placed on them.
Here is a profound event that links shame with modesty. In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were sinless and naked and unashamed until they ate the forbidden fruit. The first indication of sin was that they felt naked. “At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness” {Genesis 3:7}. This is the first mention of shame in the Bible and it is associated with a consciousness of wrongdoing and being physically naked. They were embarrassed!
In the times that we are in today, I think many have lost a sense of shame and embarrassment. Is that the explanation for the immodest dress styles? I do not suggest that we dress like nuns. True beauty, in my opinion, is an inner characteristic but it is also modest and enhanced by outer beauty. This is an ongoing and mostly subjective topic.
In conclusion, I would rather not be embarrassed and uncomfortable by fashionable and body revealing clothes.
