I am so fascinated because in nature animals do not have midwives nor do they have textbooks or analgesics. Yet they know instinctively what to do because `God made them so'. With the minimum of fuss or mess animals deliver five, six or more babies. Our cat delivered five kittens. She chose an isolated place which was our spare bathroom and did the job very well.
My mind leaps back to a day twenty-five years ago. After three days of increasingly grueling labor characterized by shuddering contracting uterine and back pain, I arrived at the point of exhaustion. The epidural anesthetic had failed. At the end, I remember that I had an unbearably urgent and instinctive desire to deliver or push. Something that seemed very large was twisting and turning within me.
The midwives helping me were very experienced, caring and empathetic. They were positioned at various strategic places around me and my `bed'. On my left sat my glassy-eyed husband trying to smile and say the right things; and on my right a very kind encouraging `coach' midwife whom I knew personally. I myself was a trained midwife. I knew intellectually what was going on but experientially I was a complete novice.
The production and birth of our first born child, a daughter, was unforgettable. It was full of agony but then, oh such joy!
I am still amazed and I wonder about women in primitive settings who with very little training and sometimes alone go through labor and deliver babies.
Life and living as God created it to be, started with one man. We read in the Old and New Testament, and in ancient historic documents about nations and peoples who repeat the process of giving birth and propagating humanity. That is God’s plan. He wants us to inhabit the earth and it all starts with this repetitive, orderly and yet so complex beautiful process. He is a God of beginnings. In fact *He is the Beginning and the End.
Yes. As we know life today there is an end but one day there will be no end. The old order as John describes it will pass away.
