I remember my first trip to the beach like it was yesterday. My parents have never been “beach” people and we often vacationed in the mountains. So naturally, my first experience with the coast was very memorable.
I traveled with a family friend to the North Carolina shore when I was in fourth grade. We didn’t get to stay in an ocean front house but were only one street over, well within walking distance. Once we had unpacked our clothes, we excitedly changed into our swim suits, grabbed a towel, and headed out for my first experience with the ocean.
As I stood in the sand, near the breaking waves, I was mesmerized by the peaceful lull of the crashing waves onto shore. Water stretched out before me as far as I could see, with the sun shimmering on the waves as they billowed and rolled. The smell of salt overtook my senses as the gentle breeze swirled my hair.
I was tempted to go closer…
I gradually crept to the water, standing just within reach for the ocean to meet my feet. The cool water splashed my toes and then was pulled rhythmically back into the big sea.
Suddenly, I was overtaken by fear, as the sand sifted from beneath my feet. The grains of sand were shaky, being pulled right out from underneath me, definitely not to be trusted. The sensations fooled me as I perceived I was drifting into the water, unstable, unsafe.
Almost losing my balance, I inched away from the waves to the safety of dry sand. I needed to be where I felt secure, where the ground was solid beneath my feet. I needed a firm foundation.
My first experience at the beach reminds me of the many times as an adult I still feel like I’m standing on shaky sand. Mistakes, failed relationships, poor attitudes, and just the busyness of life, can make me feel insecure. But the Bible reminds me in 1 Corinthians I shouldn’t fear when my world is plagued by shifting sand underfoot.
Jesus Christ is my true foundation, my rock. He is the only reason for my existence and provides unwavering security, even when everything seems out of control. He will never let me down, as He is the foundation of eternal peace and life.
Put your trust in Jesus today by releasing your problems to Him through prayer. Be comforted as the waves of peace roll over you, never being shaken from your firm foundation in God’s son and His love.
“Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessings You have given me. Make my foundation firm in You, even when it seems that everything is falling apart around me. Grant me peace in the security of your never ending love and protection. In Jesus’ Holy name I pray, Amen.”

My only red ink is in one paragraph you used the word needed in back-to-back sentences.
I think you did a brilliant job of describing the sifting sand. I think even if I hadn't felt that sensation myself, I still would have known what it felt like because of your great description.
