To soothe to sleep a tired head
From a long day of playing, cooing and giggles
Sweet baby laughs and sweet baby wiggles
She could have been cleaning, this mother who’s rocking
Washing a dish, or mending a stocking
The house all around could have been spic and span
If everything went according to plan
But alas! Most days don’t go quite as we wish it
And try as we may, we cannot predict it
Little Johnny today had trouble with throwing
While the baby struggled with teeth that were growing
In the midst of the chaos, this Mom made a choice
To ignore for a while those things with no voice
She hushed up the dishes, cleaning and mopping
And shushed the hole in that old tired stocking
Choosing instead to cuddle her child
Praying for him to grow up strong and mild
Realizing a treasure that transcends time and space
Enjoying the time that cannot be replaced
Sometime in the future, that Mom and her son
Will stand before Jesus when earth’s work is done
“Here is my treasure,” she’ll say with a smile
“A Beautiful child, to stay for a while.”
“I know it’s important to be clean and neat
But I also took time to guide little feet
Dishes and dust will just come back tomorrow
