A grenade explodes to my left, the sound momentarily deafening me. I feel as if I am in a hopeless movie, a movie most likely that of a tragedy, with no escape. My finger trembles above the trigger of my gun. I have never been more afraid in my life. A shot ricochets off the dirt mound I am huddled behind, spraying dirt in my face. The enemy is closing in. I can feel it. I need to move. I can feel my heart pick up speed at the mere thought of leaving my safe haven. With my hearing still weakened, I need to depend more readily on my eyesight. Great! I wear magnifying glasses as eyewear. I smear the dust from my lenses, taking in a deep gulp of air. This is it. The moment I’ve been dreading. Rising to my knees, I launch myself into a crouching run towards a new place of refuge.
Another grenade explosion. It throws me to the ground. I can feel the shards of my glasses shatter into my eyes, no longer able to see a thing. Reaching my hand towards my face, I find warm liquid covering my face, and rushing over my shaky finger tips. I stumble to my feet, driven to leave this nightmarish piece of land I find myself in. The hair on the back of my neck prickles. I can feel the enemy lurking nearby.
A sharp pain slams into my calf, throwing me to my hands and knees. Another shot hits me in my side. Lying there in agony my hearing finally returns to me, and for this small gift I am thankful. But in the next instant I wish it would have remained impaired. The odd sounds of a language I can’t understand reaches my newly repaired ears, informing me that I have landed right in the lion’s den. I need to get up, but my body refuses to listen to my brain. Why can’t I move? Is the ground shaking? Or is it just me? It is so hard to breathe. I am so scared. I shouldn’t be here. I don’t deserve this! I’m a nice guy! I’m faithful to my wife! I’m a good father!
A vision of my baby girl clouds my mind. I can see her as if I were holding her in my arms. Her dark brown hair in short pigtails, a gummy, dimpled smile lighting up her face, with glittering blue eyes. She looks so much like her mother. All of a sudden her face disintegrates into black, as I lose consciousness.
“Someone give me some morphine!” A faint voice echoes. Who is that? Where am I? I try to open my eyes, only to remain in darkness. Then everything comes rushing back.
“Doc, morphine on this man is a waste. He’s a lost cause.” A disheartened voice answers.
“Doc?” I could hear my weak voice rasp.
“Yes son, I’m here.”
“Am I going to die?” Silence met my question. That was answer enough. “Tell my wife I love her.” The salt in my tears stung my eyes. “And tell my baby girl I’m sorry I’m not there to watch her grow up.” A sob tore at my throat. I could hear sniffles in the room. “Doc?”
“Yeah, I’ll tell her.” He said
“Will you say the Lord’s prayer with me?” I could hear the doctors and nurses all take deep breaths in. A crisp female voice broke the silence as a cold hand firmly grasped mine.
“Our Father who art in Heaven hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on Earth as it is in Heaven…”
A bright light shone into my eyes.
“Doc! I can see! I can see!” I exclaimed. “Can you see them? Can you hear them? They are so beautiful!”
“Yes I see them.” A nurse answered, her voice strangely sad. “Go with them.”
And so I did. I took hold of the beautiful One’s hand, and walked into eternity.
