Walking across the moon lit yard, I noticed everyone in their own little groups.
The seventies grouped under the awning. The teens were splashing in the pool. The forties crowd busy with the grill and the fireworks, were getting ready to set the sky ablaze.
“Where’s Donna” I asked slipping into the middle of a, remember when conversation. No one answered they just pointed to the pond, still gabbing away.
Behind the fence surrounding the pool Donna sat motionless, normally the general issuing the orders her stillness made my heart catch.
Plopping down in the empty chair beside Donna, I noticed Sherry holding her hand.
“O.K. so what’s wrong?”
Donna never taking her eyes from the pond said, “I have a lump in my neck,” reaching for my hand she showed me where. “Don’t say anything to the family yet ok.”
The pond all of a sudden held my attention too. My mind shouted NO! Not Donna.
God please let her be ok
. The answer was a firm No!
The colors of the fireworks decorated the sky; the pond usually dark, was now a field of colors. I continued to argue with God. Donna gave both our hands a squeeze, we rose giving each other a silent hug, and pasting smiles on our faces we rejoined the party.
The cancer had spread from her colon; surgery was a quick two days later the halls were crowded with her family and friends. The family one end, the friends the other, I qualified for both.
Donna was wheeled into her room. The nurse was adjusting the bags of fluids and pain medications. The Doctor stood by her bed discussing the results with her and her husband
Larry.
I stood where I could see Donna’s face, she asked a few questions than closed her eyes. The Doctor patted her hand and headed down the hall to be trapped by all the family.
Her mother asked what all wanted to know, crowding around him all were silent.
Standing by Donna’s door I waited I already knew. Donna opened her eyes and motioned for me to come to her side. Holding my hand we watched the nurse leave the room. Through the window I saw the Doctor still answering questions.
Donna her voice barely a whisper, made me promise. You and Larry must always be positive. From you two I never want to hear anything but that all will be well.
Larry nodded from the window. I nodded as I squeezed her hand.
“Now” Donna said, the general back in charge, “could you please brush my hair I look a mess.” Taking the brush I combed her hair as she informed me about the chemo and radiation treatments, “When my hair grows back maybe it will be curly,” Larry and I both chuckled Donna with curls would be a hoot.
The family members started drifting into the room, I stepped back, Sherry motioned me to come to her side, and she whispered eighteen months. Smiling I patted her hand as I walked back to Donna’s side. God I prayed, I’m going to hound you till you say yes.
When we pray, there are always three things that can come our way
1) Cured
2) Courage to endure till we are cured.
3) Carried to heaven to spend eternity with God
The Doctor was exactly right almost to the day. Donna taught her Sunday school class for the last time on Easter. She died on July 7th. Larry and I kept our promise to her, it was the hardest thing we ever did. We never got to prepare for the separation.
How many of you ask the question why with no answer in sight. Donna and I did talk about the whys, and what we concluded was no matter what, we are so loved. The answer will come sometime, but for now we will just lean on His all surrounding love.
Psalm 139:17-18
How precious are your thoughts about me, Oh God!
They are innumerable!
I can’t even count them: they outnumber the grains of sand!
And when I wake up in the morning
YOU ARE STILL WITH ME!
