Maybe it was because of his son in the back seat. His four-year-old son. His son, his only son, whom he loved.
Maybe it was simply fear. He never saw himself as a brave man. True, if would've thought about it, he’d have seen that he’d done things that took real courage.
The memory came to him, but quickly vanished. Now was a different story. It was easier to be brave, to take risks, back then. That was before Victoria. That was before Julian. There was more at stake now.
Anyway, what would he say? What would he do?
He drove past, but something inside still nagged him. He hadn’t seen the angel, but something inside him had, and it wasn’t letting up.
“I’ll pull inside the Quick-Mart parking lot,” he thought, “then I’ll decide.”
He made the turn.
Things had been changing in his life recently. In the way he prayed. In the way he listened.
He used to ask God to help him make decisions. Now he was learning to thank God for making him a good decision maker. This took more faith. It was easier to pray, “You make the decision.” It was tougher to think that God trusted him to decide wisely.
He pulled into a spot.
This wasn’t the first time this happened to him. He seemed to have a sensitivity that others didn’t. He could spot them easily, in every situation. He could see it in their shoes, in their beards, in their clothes, in their dispositions, in what they carried.
He always thought, “What can I do?” And he would drive on, feeling horrible. “I can’t give them a job. I can’t give them a home. What good is help if it isn’t long term?”
Then one day, as he prayed, he remembered the answer FDR gave to that question: “People don’t eat in the long run.”
He checked his wallet. A ten, two fives, and a couple of singles.
“Where are we going?” his son called from the back.
He didn’t answer. He wasn’t quite sure.
“Food,” he thought. “I can get the man something to eat.” He drove out of the parking lot, back in the direction of the man.
“Where are we going?”
Again, he didn’t answer. He had promised Julian a trip to the bookstore. But how could he go and spend money on....
There was the man. Still walking, and right in front of a spot to pull over.
Turn signal.
Left turn into the driveway.
Deep breath. Car running or no? No. Take the keys.
Here goes....
He hadn’t seen the angel. But something inside had, and he had responded.
Maybe that’s just the kind of thing that turns a life around.
