She cupped her little hands together and said, “They are this tiny.â€
She looked up at me with sparkling brown eyes of excitement. With great joy she was anticipating going to her Nana’s for the day. When we got to Nana’s she jumped into Nana’s arms, then quickly moved to the floor and held up her arms for me.
“I want to show you the bunnies,†she said.
We walked to the rabbit cages. Nanna let her take one of the baby bunnies from the cage and hold it with her little hands.
She looked at me with wide eyes and said, “feel how soft they are!†Then she proceeded to insist that I too hold the soft ball of fur.
I gently held the “tiny bunny,†and said, “wow his fur is like velvet.â€
Then Lexie took the little baby rabbit from me. With deliberation she walked over to a chair where she sat down, or should I say sat up, for she had a little trouble reaching the chair with her short three year old legs.
“This is her baby-sitting spot,†said Nana. She will sit and hold the little bunny until I take it from her.
I didn’t want to leave her, but she certainly didn’t mind. The look on her face was utter contentment. She was in her element with these “tiny bunnies.â€
My heart melts when my great granddaughter looks at me with those beautiful eyes. Her hair is golden blonde and falls in little stings of curls around her face and down her shoulders. That memory and others of the innocent joy of a child will always be with me.
When Jesus looks down at me, I hope sometimes. he sees a look of amazement when I read His Word, stand in worship, or hear a message from my pastor. I wonder if my face ever lights up enough to give him joy similar to what I have experienced.
If the innocence and fascination of a little child could be found in each of us during these difficult times there would be more peace than turmoil. There would be awe and admiration when reminded of the greatness of our God. There would be love for those around us despite their beliefs or actions. There would be less violence, less hatred and more acceptance and forgiveness. If we all were more like a child, and allowed the Lord Jesus to live through us, it would surely change the world.
I will challenge myself to find that place of wonderment. As I sit and enjoy the waves splashing up on the sand, or the amazing sunset over the horizon, I will smile and breathe a silent “thank you†to my Creator. When I witness the leaves changing in the mountains and drive through seemingly endless bursts of color I will open my eyes wide and say, “thank you†to my Father God. When I watch a tiny hand hold a baby bunny, I will whisper a soft “thank you†to my Lord for allowing me to experience such a blessing.
“At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?†Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.†Matthew 18:1-5 (NKJV)
