Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday May 19, 2009

Having experienced a life crumbling, mine, crumbling around me more than once, I have developed a sort of unilateral camaraderie with others who in some way or other, go through the heart and gut wrenching experiences.

Keep in mind when you lose, material possession, or reputation, or the chariot swings low and carries a loved one away to the other side, it hurts whether you are a low life or among the most genteel among the children of men.

For many years I have read of the suffering during the holocaust of Elie Wiesel. In that horrible epochal blight on the record of the world, this man watched his parents and little sister die in the concentration camps. While I wish he would, Wiesel does not bring himself to belief in God; he does use godly precepts to overcome the despair and bitterness suffered by many others. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his work in helping other struggling people around the world.

Wiesel is among the many that lost millions in the Ponzi scheme operated by fellow Jew, Bernard Madoff. CBS News correspondent, Jeff Greenfield interviewed Mr. Wiesel and his article appeared May 16, 2009. Mr. Greenfield wanted to know "How someone finds the resilience to shake, themselves up, in the face of such a blow." Wiesel's answer is a Doctorate in overcoming the roller coaster ride we call life.

"When my life seems to be partly or wholly in ruins, I build on them. I may even use the ruins for the buildings. Second, I will never allow anyone to change my life or destroy what I have done with it, somehow what I must keep in mind is what I think of myself."

I like Wiesel's response especially the last phrase. I would/do add my own to his last phrase:

"Somehow what I must also keep in mind is what God thinks of me."

Jesus Christ dealt with the painful loses of life when he said in John 16:33:

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Dr. Tom Wallace said one time, "When people throw stones at you, build something."
