Larry Lilly's Letter Monday May 18, 2009

One Sunday evening in the long ago, after church I remarked to the Great Blonde that I felt like I was a superintendent at an Asylum for the Insane. The dear girl went ballistic insisting the God would get me for thinking such thoughts.

I made a number of futile attempts to dig myself out of the deepening dilemma, but to no avail. To her tender mind even thinking that God's giants could in fact be nuttier than fruitcakes was as near blasphemy as any mortal would dare venture and it was far too close for her or perish the thought, her spouse could be suffering diminished capacity.

I did manage to remove myself from feeding near the bottom when I pointed out that since the fall of Adam and thereby the plunge of the entire race into an abyss far removed from the prototype, we are all a little touched, else how could we cope with this brutal world having lost the splendor of Eden? This along with a quote from a famous theologian got me through the night. Here's the quote:

"When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained."

Most of the material I read fails to take this visionary statement by Mark Twain into consideration when the articles etc, wrestle with life's grand purpose, our search for meaning and of course the real show stopper, Why am I here? According to the Bible when our progenitor made a crazy choice, we in him, were taken from the place designed for sane people and banished to a very large asylum, we call our world.

Christian teaching recognizes that only through an experience with Christ will we have moments of glorious lucidity. Tragically, the lucid switch will not be turned on full blast until the day when we see Him face to face. Ah, what a day that will be. I suppose it will be like the experience of the maniac of Gadara.

I remember way back when I began my career as a pastor, my pastor informed me that I would never be capable of reaching normal people. I immediately thought he knew that I was subnormal. If you are around me very much it's not that hard to figure out. Only after many months of introspection did I grasp the truth: I could not reach normal people, because there are no normal people to reach. Adam messed up all such hopes and so preachers and other nut cases can only reach people like ourselves; which gives us license to go out and tell the world. Every last person.
