Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday May 20, 2009

One of my prayers is to become the man my three dogs suppose me to be. This is not an easy dream, but if I do achieve this monumental aspiration future history books will point to me as the second greatest to ever walk the earth!! I do NOT care all that much for cats as they are self worshipers.

J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, wrote a much less known work titled, "The Little Minister" and gave this advice to the world, well at least the part of the world that read his book:

"The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another; and his humblest hour is when he compares the volume as it is with what he vowed to make it."

Admittedly, I am well into my mid-years and I often wrestle with the terrible reality that while I have made much better progress than predicted by even my mother, (I did not die in the electric chair prior to my 21st birthday) I sense truth nagging at my innards, that not only should I have done better, I could have focused by full force on being who and what the Lord made me to be. This is a sobering thought when life is half gone by.

Like most humans who honestly admit to themselves that they have frittered away too much time, which according to Ben Franklin is the stuff of life, I find some comfort in old excuses such as Mom loved my sister more than she did me. I was warped in my developmental years by grinding poverty, not just poverty mind you, but grinding poverty, and several very female teachers, during my feeble attempt at education married older men, in spite of the fact that they must have known how deeply I cared for them.

Tragically, such well founded excuses have no value in the arena of life, you either achieved what you wrote in the diary of your dreams or you did not. Working a little harder and a lot smarter, praying more and whining less, doing the Lord's will instead of my own, would have a made a difference.

Accepting the fact that the first half is over and the equivalent of Coach Masonheimer is giving me what for at halftime I intend to make this half the best possible as I walk with Jesus much more. I'll trust Christ to call the plays this half.
