What would you do if you found out the truth was looking for you? Everyone says they are looking for the truth, especially the ones who are trying to avoid it. We look out in the world for signs and indicators, and we look inside ourselves for memories and methods. We want the truth, but we disregard what we cannot understand. A run of good luck, serendipity, being in the right place at the right time, running into an old friend in a faraway city; just coincidence? It is not meant to be understood, we are meant to partake the living truth. We are shown daily that the truth is beyond understanding but can be lived regardless.
The reason we must have a certain level of energy of a special kind is that it is not up to us to make all the efforts. The fact is that the truth WANTS to be found and is willing to help. The truth is looking for us. It was designed to look and we were designed to be found. The world IS out there, but we perceive it IN HERE. The truth is in here, in us, waiting to come out into the light.
If we were to stop trying so hard to do, and start waiting and listening and watching for it, we might begin to see. It takes will, and patience, and attention. We are the hunters in our attitude, but we are also the quarry, waiting to be found. This lesson is about thinking and the results of that thinking. Are we worth looking for, and who is looking?
33. The Eye of the Lord
Be joyful in the Lord and do good work, for happiness suits the upright. Praise Him with music and singing. Sing a new song, play it skillfully and loud; for the Lord is righteous and all his works are done in truth. He loves justice and the earth is full of his goodness. By his word were the heavens made, from his breath came the stars. He gathered the seas together in his hand and the ocean basins became his storehouses.
Let all the earth fear the Lord and the inhabitants stand in awe of Him. When He spoke, it was done; what He commands stands forever. He has brought the council of unbelievers to nothing, He makes people’s devices worthless. His counsels stand forever and the thoughts of his heart are given to all generations. Fortunate is the nation whose God is the Lord, blessing comes to the people He has chosen for his own inheritance.
The Lord looked from heaven and considered the sons of men. From where He sat He looked upon all the inhabitants of the earth. He had made their hearts alike and He then considered their works: there was no man saved by the power of his nation or army and there was no mighty man delivered by his own strength. It is vanity to look for safety in earthly things or in the power of men.
The eye of the Lord sees only them that fear Him and hope for his mercy. Only then can He deliver their souls from death in times of famine. Our souls wait for the Lord, He is our help and our shield. Our hearts shall rejoice in Him because we have trusted in his holy name.
May your mercy come to us, O Lord, according to the hope that we have in You.
In lesson thirty-two we saw the action of God’s forgiveness in our lives and were told of his Eye upon us, but what does that mean? What does God look for in a human and when we become visible, what does He see? We are told that He looks from Heaven and considers the sons of men. This lesson tells that none are saved from death by their own power but we have hope and trust nonetheless. We have dominion over the animals and the elements of the earth: we are powerful but does that makes us worthy of protection?
A rock star looks out over an audience and sees happy cheering people, applauding and holding up lighters, shouting praise and singing along. No doubt he sings well and maybe writes his own lyrics: he can make you smile but does he know your name and can he save your life?
We make our praises in what we say and what we do. We think about our Lord and the promise of the salvation He brings. We feel his fearful eye upon us and take comfort in mutual recognition. There is power we can use in this world and in this moment, but it is available only to those of courage who have the power to use it.
