We are not strong but help is on the way and this lesson is about doing. There's nothing quite like a loss, or even a close call to get your attention. We get instructions from parents, teachers, friends and relatives but until we find ourselves in tough situations maybe we think we don't need much help.
It takes courage to acknowledge our weakness and a certain maturity to decide to look for help. Most people wouldn't think twice about getting help doing some home or car repair they don't know about, but personal advice is another matter. And spiritual advice? Forget about it.
I spoke before of a need for a certain level of energy before these lessons could have their full effect. Ironically it is in understanding our weakness that the foundation of our real strength lies. Only the meek will have the power to inherit the earth. Psalm 32 has much to give to anyone who reads it, but it is of great help to those who are really trying to lead a spiritual life, but having a hard time.
32. Learning the Way
Fortunate is he whose mistakes are forgotten and whose bad judgement is forgiven.
Favored is the man who the Lord does not blame, who tries his best to do what is right.
When I kept my trouble to myself the struggle wore me out.
Day and night I worried but I couldn’t figure it out on my own.
When I brought it to You in prayer and said, “I cannot do this. Help me Lord,”
Then You heard. I should have never left You out.
Everyone who would be Godly should speak to the Lord always,
So when trouble comes He will hear.
The Lord is my hiding place, He preserves me from trouble and makes me sing for joy.
Let me tell you what I’ve learned, I will watch and guide you.
Don’t be like a horse or a mule that doesn’t understand,
Whose mouth must be held with a bit.
The troublemaker finds many sorrows but joy comes to him who trusts the Lord.
Be fortunate in the Lord, the righteous will rejoice and the upright in heart will shout for joy.
This is much like the the very first lesson about doing the right things and what comes after. But here we begin to see more than our doing, we see the results of God’s forgiveness in our lives. We are still expected to not walk in the council of the ungodly, stand in the way of sinners or the seat of the scornful, but the path we are on has not made us angels: our nature will always be the same. The real Truth is that God forgives and forgets if we ask it of Him.
We are higher on the path now and we know the struggle will always wear us out without help. The true knowledge, the ultimate end of all our thinking is that we will never be able to figure it out or do it on our own. We must always come to our Creator, we must know He is near always, feel his presence and act like He is standing right in front of us with his eye upon us all the time. It is not the eye of judgement that is upon us, it is recognition. The reason we exist is that He sees us, but in order for Him to recognize us, to see our face, we must first have faces. We become what we do all day long, we speak to the Lord always and we become the ones who give praise.
There is a big step up in this lesson and it is hard to understand if you must look at choices as being one or the other. We don’t simply give praise or not: there is always a third view and that is why we are looking at action, thinking and feeling. We act by giving our praises in action, thinking and feeling; we think about our actions and emotions and their results; and we feel the interaction, the give and take with our immediate surroundings. Our worldly search for freedom and power enslaves us to desire: even the desire for knowledge and freedom. It is in obedience to the truth that we find the power to act according to our will. Don’t be like a horse or a mule that always needs a bit in its mouth for guidance; go out and be free to create and grow. Trust in God and know that He also trusts in you: He gives the power you need and the joy as well.
