Prayers
Few words can mean so much to both the person who hears them and to the person who speaks them, than the phrase, “I’ll pray for you.” The only other phrase that comes close is, “I love you.” But, come to think of it, don’t both phrases have the same meaning? What better way to show your love for others than to pray for them? There is no other gift you can give as loving or precious as your prayers.
Prayer is a two-way street that benefits all. It doesn’t matter whether you are on the sending or the receiving end of prayer. Our prayers for others form a triangle from us to God and from God to the person for whom we pray. Heavenly grace flows in all directions along the sides of the triangle and blessings are bestowed on both the person being prayed for and the person praying.
There is a line from an old hymn that proclaims, “Blest be the tie that binds.” Prayer is the tie that binds us together in Christian love. Each Sunday when we recite the Creed we state our belief in the Communion of Saints. This tenet of our faith holds that all Christians are bound together for eternity. We are inseparably united with all other Christians, those here on earth and those safely home in heaven.
And, when we pray, our prayers are joined with those of all Christians, whether living or dead, and presented to the Father in the name of Jesus. Recognizing this, can anyone doubt the power of prayer? Isn’t it exciting to be part of such an array of heavenly goodness and power?
If you are praying for the sick you can be certain that you are pleasing the Father and that He hears you. If you are sick and being prayed for, take heart and be assured that God is listening. He is listening to all those who love you. Listening to all the voices of the Communion of Saints. He will protect you. He will comfort you. And, when your time has run its course, He will welcome you home.
