Notre Dame Fan

We had a brand new Irish priest in our parish. Very few in the congregation knew him well, yet he had a friendly attitude that made you love him on first sight.

He was an ardent Notre Dame fan. Every Sunday during football season just before he gave the final blessing he would issue a request. “Everyone please pray that Notre Dame will win next Saturday,” he implored.

One Saturday Notre Dame played Ohio State. They lost. We all knew that Father would be saddened by the news.

Being the devil that I am, I decided to give him a friendly jab.

On Sunday morning I put on my Ohio State sweatshirt and took a seat in the very first pew where Father could not miss me.

Father processed down the aisle and took his place on the altar. He glanced around the congregation and his eyes stopped when he saw “Ohio State” emblazoned in tall red letters on my chest.

All during Mass his eyes kept returning to my shirt and he glared at it, and me.

As he prepared to give his final blessing he paused. He pointed towards me and said,“Will you please stand up, Sir.” I looked around, innocently pointed to my chest and mouthed, “Me.”

“Yes you,” Father directed with an aggravated voice and a scornful sneer on his lips.

I stood up. Father then gruffly ordered me to “Turn around.”

Now the whole congregation could see my “evil” Ohio State sweatshirt.

“I just wanted everyone to see what a heretic looks like,” Father said with a broad smile and a jolly giggle.

From that day forward we were best of friends and he never missed an opportunity to make me the target of his jokes.
