GOD SPEAKS TO US

God speaks to me often; yet, I have never heard his voice. He speaks to me through a sunset that turns a summer sky to scarlet, with ocean waves foaming on a rocky shore, in a drop of morning dew on a rose, and through the thousands of stars that sparkle in a clear autumn sky.

A friend wrote recently of her experience in an apple orchard on a hilltop in Pennsylvania. She told me she heard God speaking through the rolling green hills which stretched across the horizon from East to West and North to South.

Her story reminded me of a similar encounter I had with God on a mesa top in the Arizona Red Rock country. On every hand, there were outcroppings of magnificent red rocks and boulders. It looked as if God had dropped a can of red paint on this particular spot when he was fashioning the earth.

Have you ever stood at the rim of the Grand Canyon? Tourists approach the canyon’s edge with awe-hushed voices. Even those who may not believe in God recognize that there is something spiritual about the place—that He is near. So they fall silent, listening for Him. I’ll wager that each of you can name a particular time or place where God has spoken to you through his natural creations.

God also talks to us with words. I don’t mean just the words of Holy Scriptures. He also uses words of poetry, prose, and drama, words that inspire us to love one another, and to be kind. And God speaks through the sounds we hear—the whistle of a songbird—the tinkle of a bell—the sounds that gladden our soul and put a rhythm in our step. Man’s words and music inspired by the wonder that is our loving God.

God speaks to us through the lives of his creatures. Many of God’s people live lives that speak loudly and boldly of his goodness and love. Mother Teresa of Calcutta comes to mind, but she is just one of thousands of saints and martyrs. Ordinary people too have heard God speak and have listened to what he has to say.


Look around you. There are people living in your neighborhood who are the living voices of God. They speak His words in their actions and deeds.


So listen for God to speak to you.
Be quiet now, and listen for His word.
Do not listen with your ears … Listen with your heart.
For only there can He be heard.

God whispers … “I love you.”
