Lesson four builds on the foundation of the first three and begins a cycle of its own. We have been given enough energy to do what needs call for, but we don’t have enough to waste. We must become more efficient in our actions if we are to become more effective and move forward in our development.
We have come through enlightenment, responsibility and danger with the strength and courage that has been given to us. We have been protected and sustained and felt the blessing of the Lord on his people. Now, like a growing child we want to know why.
4. The Answer
Hear me when I ask, my King and my teacher. You showed me the way when I was in trouble and now I have a question. How long will it be until men seek the truth? How long will they ridicule real power and only look for what is entertaining and dramatic? How long?
The King has a special place for those who want to know the truth and He hears us. Draw near his awesome power and leave all worldly desires behind. Look into your heart and wait for Him. Do the right thing as you are able and know the King of Righteousness will understand. There are many who are looking for someone to show them the way.
May the Lord help us and make us strong. I am always happy to be of service, but even more glad when things are not going well. I will sleep peacefully tonight and every night for I have found my safety in You.
The first lesson had us look to other people for examples of right and wrong action. Now we are asked to look within ourselves, to take the responsibility of lesson two to decide based on our own experience and to act in spite of the presence of fear.
Lesson four was called the answer, but it began with a question. Asking questions while seeking the truth is the best way to keep our feet moving along the path, but we must do more than seek good questions to ask. We must also learn to be still and listen for the answers, they will come (Lk 12:36). Progress is not always measured by solving the problems we face, but by what we learn from trying to solve them.
The question was, How long will they seek only the entertaining and dramatic? We might as well ask how long will a lazy man be lazy. There is no end to doing nothing. The real question we face is implied by the answer that was given; who do we want to be like, and will that lead to who we actually become? We are looking for someone to show us the way and we see examples all around us, but only within ourselves can we decide what to do.
This lesson is about information and how to act upon it. We draw near and wait for the truth, then do our best as we are able. The answer is to be of service, no matter how small, to serve the King by helping others. It seems a paradox that we help ourselves the most by spending our efforts on others, but the energy and strength we have is already an unearned gift. By using that gift in service do we gain its real value, even when it’s hard to do; especially when it’s hard to do. By sustaining others we manifest joy and peace in ourselves.
We are learning to interact with the Power that created us. If you have gotten even this far you are looking for something, but only the Spirit can show the Truth to you and you can only know it within yourself. Reason tells you that this is the truth if you believe it, emotion knows the joy and terror of a living God, but action is the doing of believing it. The doubters and scoffers desire unearned proof that they would dismiss as magic even if they could see it. Our actions become to proofs to others, and to ourselves.
We are always happy to be of service, but even more glad when things are not going well because our real safety is not of this earth. Any soldier or policeman knows many levels of safety and how quickly they can change. We can sleep peacefully when we know where to put our trust.
