Like the first lesson of enlightenment, the fourth gave new information that needs to be acted upon. This fifth lesson, like the second that faced responsibility, is about considering what to do and finding the meaning in doing it. Building upon the trust we began in the last lesson we are faced with another new day and with a new attitude we go with a light step where it leads.
5. The Path
Listen to my words and consider my thoughts, my Lord.
Take notice of my voice and hear my prayer, my King and my God.
I begin my day looking up and speaking to You, Lord;
For I know You take no pleasure in wrongdoing and allow no evil to come near.
The foolish don’t exist in your presence, You hate the working of evil.
You will destroy the liar and shut out the killers and thieves.
I will come to You and be allowed in your house in your plentiful mercy,
I will fear You and nothing else.
Lead me through my enemies, Lord, make the path visible and I will follow.
My enemies cannot speak of faithfulness, they only know flattery;
Their throats are an open grave; destroy them, my God.
Caught up in their deceit and broken by their lies, they have turned from You.
We who trust in You will rejoice and shout for joy, we are safe within your defenses.
You, Lord, will favor our works with your shield.
Lesson four was about the action of finding God’s influence in our living and now we find the words that describe it. We are taught to begin each day with prayer, not asking for gifts or help but in simple conversation with our Guide. Like a splash of water on a smiling face, it starts the day in the right direction. I include Angels and Saints in my prayers, but it is no more complicated nor less heartfelt than saying good morning to my wife. We all know He has rules of the House and we must follow them if we are to stay here (Mt 5:17-18). The responsibility of lesson two is enhanced here in lesson five and it is a safety precaution: we must abide by those rules for He does not allow evil to come near. Evil is destroyed in that presence and we need to fear the Master’s power.
There are so many choices of paths to take and only within ourselves are the resources to decide. We must practice using our eyes to pick out a trail instead of using them to figure out what we are going to desire next. Through flattery we can be persuaded to want things, but to want for something means that there is something missing. The irony is that what so many people are missing is the ability not to desire things. Desire is a wrong turn that leads to an endless loop, a dead end path.
Enlightenment, responsibility and fear are all reinforced in this lesson and the reward is spelled out in vivid terms. Those who trust in the Lord will shout for joy and find safety in his defenses. Safety is a key word here for this is a high voltage environment that is about what works and why. Mercy brings healing, but evil can only destroy itself and what holds on to it. This is a dangerous business and it would be better not to come at all than to hurry in with the wrong intentions.
