Lesson two taught the responsibility that comes from the enlightenment of the lesson before. Knowledge and understanding bring to us power to use as we decide, but with power comes responsibility. It does not make our choices easier: it makes them more complicated.

The path is already becoming dangerous. If we wield the power we gain as if there are no consequences we will fail to grow and we will be unable to move farther (Eze 30:6). We must search for the truth carefully. Today's lesson is the step of learning diligence.

3. About Fear

Lord, what have I gotten into? There are so many who are against us, so many who say we are wrong and that there is no power except the kind they know. So it always was.

You are my shield, my strength and my hope. I asked to be shown the truth and You heard me. So it now is.

I can sleep without fear, You are there when I awake. Ten thousand fearful people don’t scare me. Although we are surrounded, we will punch their faces and break their teeth. Salvation belongs to the King and He gives it to his people. So it shall always be.

Our enlightenment of the first lesson was followed by the responsibility of the second and now we see the danger and fear of failure with the third. This cycle of three is the most basic unit of teaching, the threefold cord that is not quickly broken (Ec. 4:12). Action, thought and emotion are all we have to interact with the world around us, but it is enough. Creation, the word of truth, and enlightenment are elements of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit and they are reflected in us. We do, we think and we feel. In this lesson we resist the pressure of those who are against us, we learn the truth of our relationship to the power, and we overcome our fear.

"Ten thousand fearful people don't scare me" is a strong statement. It shows we are willing to seek the truth in the face of very strong opposition, and we take comfort in knowing that just because many people believe something does not make it so. Fear is not bad, it is a sense like touch or smell that puts us on alert to smaller details of our existence (Lk 12:4-5). Exploring what makes us afraid gives us a chance to practice our courage which is not about getting rid of fear, but acting according to our intentions in the presence of fear.

Fear guards the door to the power we need. It is not the power we think money will bring, or the power to manipulate things or people. We must find the power to govern ourselves, to become who we would choose to be if we could. The method for improvement, for moving along the path is first to act as best we can, then evaluate what has happened and experience emotional involvement in the outcome, then act again on better information.

Blessings and good fortune come to those who learn the path. Even a smile causes a change because we interact with God’s good creation when we enjoy Him and obey his rules. We don’t just take from our surroundings, we create actions that have consequences and results. This is a surprise short cut if you are ready: seek out what you fear the most and face it, you will find great gain from small effort.
