Grief

I am weary
with my moaning;
every night
I flood my bed
with tears.

[CALM NOD.]
[WATCH THE MOON REFLECTING
LIGHT OFF THE SUN.]

"And......ANTARCTICA?"

"Yes, little one."

"Lord, sometimes I don't think
You're payin' ANY ATTENTION
to ME!"

"No, child."
[QUIET PAUSE.]
[GAZE AT A COUPLE 'A WHALES
FROLICKING IN THE PACIFIC.]
"You're wrong."

(Squint.)
"What d'Ya LOOKIN'
at, ANYWAY?"

[SMILE!]
"You,
My child."

"Uh, UH!"

[SMILE.]

"WHY would Ya wanna
LOOK at me, ANYHOW?"

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"I'm not THAT much....
ta' LOOK at!"

[GENTLE VOICE.]
"I look at the heart,
child."

(Long silence.)
"Yeah........
but mine is
all BROKEN,
Lord!
(Thoughtful squint.)
It's all in a bunch 'a
scattered PIECES......
sorta like an old puzzle
box: that got pushed
to the back of the basement
closet...and, nobody has
touched in YEARS!"

[GENTLE NOD.]
"Perhaps,
little one."

(Chuckle!)
"There's not even
a REMNANT, left!"

[SOLEMN GAZE.]
"No,
My precious."

"Uh, HUH!"

[GENTLE VOICE.]
"You're wrong."

"Uh, UH!"

[WISE LOOK.]
"No,
My beloved."

"HUH?"

[GENTLE SMILE.]
"I always keep a
remnant,
for Myself."
