It’s a fact beyond dispute
That trees are known by their fruit;
From each planted seed we know
The crop reflects what we sow;
We can confidently state
A thorn-bush will not bear grapes;
Figs from thistles will not grow---
We all know this to be so.

Christ used these facts to express
Our inherent sinfulness---
From the fruit our lives produce
Wickedness can be deduced;
From deep in the heart of men
Proceeds every form of sin---
The fruit of our fallen state---
Of lives sadly reprobate.

Christ produced all-perfect fruit---
The embodiment of Truth---
Not a trace of sin in Him
Who died for the sins of men---
The Seed planted in the earth
To bring many souls to birth---
Buried in the death of Christ,
Raised to Resurrection life.

Good fruit must be manifest
In all lives that would profess
To be saved through Jesus Christ---
Some signs of Resurrection life;
That trees are known by their fruit
Is a fact beyond dispute---
May our fruit display to men
Jesus’ life at work within.
