The Question of - Why?

At one time or another we all come up against the ‘why’ questions. You know the ones. They usually go like this; “if there is a God, why is there so much suffering in the world?” These are the same people who live as if God doesn’t exist until something bad happens, then they blame Him. Or here’s another; “why would a loving God strike a child with cancer?” Or “why has God given me such pain and suffering in my life? I’ve been a good person….”

These are valid questions to which seemingly no one has answers – except One. Jesus’ own disciples asked the why question. They were closer to Him than anyone on earth yet they thought it not a lack of faith to ask “why?” He tells us one reason why there is suffering in the book of John, chapter 9, verses 1 – 3. And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth. And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

We’ve all heard the story of Adam and Eve and the original sin for which all of mankind has inherited. Their sin and the consequences thereof is blamed for all the bad in this world, and rightly so. In the Genesis story, pain and suffering is the result of their sin. So naturally, the disciples assumed that was the case in this instance. But Jesus says no. No one sinned to cause this man’s blindness. He said this man is blind so the works of God may be demonstrated in him. Think about that for a moment. Could that mean that many disabilities, terminal illnesses, and catastrophic events happen so that God’s work can be accomplished?

What are the works of God? In John 6: 28-29 Jesus answers that question too: Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. Here Jesus is speaking to the people about Himself. Remember this verse? For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son that whosever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The work of God is to save mankind from their sin through His Son, Jesus Christ…..simply because He loves us…..

Jesus is saying “Believe in Me – I am the answer to all your why’s. I will give you strength to get you through them. I will give you peace. My peace shall go with you through the valley of ‘why.’ I will never leave you nor forsake you. In this world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, for I have overcome the world.”

Jesus healed the physical blindness of the man in John chapter 9. Then later in that chapter He healed him spiritually because the man professed his belief in Jesus as the Son of God. Many times I believe God uses suffering to draw us to Him. If the whole world was perfect and we never had pain, would we ever look to Jesus for answers? I think not.

Have you ever noticed that some of the most peaceful, joyful and loving people are those with disabilities? You’ve seen them - they are the ones in the wheelchairs, born with deformities or mental retardation. It seems these people have the ‘secret’ to staying full of joy. Could it be because they have a closer relationship with the Lord than the so called “normal“ person? Their faces glow with love – you can almost see Jesus shining through their eyes, and in their countenance. That’s not always the case, but many times it is. You would think these very people might be bitter at the hand life has dealt them. But, I would venture to guess their ‘secret’ is this; these precious people have found the answer to the question of “why, Lord?”
