It is profound to consider that there may be a God, and that He can be found when earnestly searched after. But some people instantly dismiss such an idea as a waste of time. They look anywhere and everywhere else for an idea to live by.

Consider one idea claimed by the convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh. He cited a poem by Invictus as his last words. The idea goes like this "I am the captain of my fate, and the master of my destiny". Where it means that a person has sole responsibility for his decisions, this is true. The problem is that most people deny the consequences of those decisions. The possibility always exists that there could be a consequence of actions that is detrimental to perpetrator of the action. The laws of physics dictate the absolute nature of physical consequences. But what the poem denies is that there are any laws of God, because it implicitly denies Him. Spiritual consequences are something it would be wise to allow for.

That phrase also suggests the idea that a person has control of circumstances, which is absolute absurdity. It would further suggest that man has control of his eternal fate. How is a person a master of his fate? Where does the destiny end? Or does it? The term "master" has a sovereign ring to it. Who really is the master?

The phrase "master of my fate, captain of my destiny" has a ring of truth, but it assumes too much and does not answer enough questions about life. There are just too many negative possibilities attached, and no guarantee of a positive outcome, the supposed reward of such a philosophy.
