Prayers
O Lord,
attend to my cry!
[Psalms 17:1]
************************
Adam and his wife
are trudging slowly,
heads down, away from
the East Gate. Adam peeks
back; two really mean,
nasty lookin' angels are standing
on either side of the Closed Gate.
Both of them are carrying a
big torch the size of .........well;
they're just really big.
Adam suddenly stops in
his barefoot tracks, and
turns around, running back.

"ADAM! Where' ya GOIN'?
YOU heard what the LORD
SAID!"
"I KNOW, EVE! But,
I gotta try SOMETHING!
Just stay right where ya
are! And, stop eating those
BANANAS! I swear you've
put on FIVE POUNDS since
we got kicked OUT!"
(Eve sticks her tongue out,
makes a face, and goes
right on eating her banana.)
(Adam turns back toward
the Gate Entrance. For
a moment, he panics:
suppose one 'a those ANGELS
throws a TORCH at him?
When THEN? Yeah, but
doesn't he look like a real
wus in front 'a his WIFE?
Hey, he's gotta try somethin';
after all, he IS the first MAN!
Shouldn't he be, like, some
sorta ROLE MODEL? YEAH!)
"Hey, GUYS?"
(Mean, nasty lookin' angel
nods at the puny, skinny man
in the ill-fitting animal
skin running towards him.)
"YEAH?
What do YOU want, Adam?
Didn't the Lord tell you
to SKIDDADLE?"
(Flame from torch
suddenly puffs up,
and then goes back to normal.)
"Yeah, sure thing, Angel!
Listen, I didn't catch
your NAME?"
"That's cuz I didn't
THROW it to you, Adam!
Hey, ya think I'm standin'
here for my HEALTH?
Now, GET!"
"Hey, LISTEN, guys!
Have a HEART!
The wife and I are real
SORRY about this whole
Mess! I'm ALREADY
tired of this yucky ANIMAL
skin! It's itchin' like
CRAZY! Could you, eh,
go talk to the LORD, for
US?"
(Mean, nasty lookin' angel
stares at the skinny, puny
human guy like he's just
turned into a dinosaur.
Actually, the angel thinks the
dinosaur's a lot cuter.)
"Hey, are you NUTS?
I never TALK to the LORD!
He says "JUMP!" and
I say 'how high'!"
(Adam, tired of standin'
face to face with the
mean, nasty lookin' angels,
sighs, and plops down on
the soft grass. The grass,
so close to the Garden,
is much softer and greener
than where Eve is standing
munching kinda' dim-witted
faced, on her fifth banana.
Trying to look real sorrowful,
but only feeling very itchy
from the ill-fitting animal
skin, Adam picks at a dandelion
beside his big hairy toe. All
of sudden he sneezes: for
the first time. Not thinking,
he sniffs the yellow, fluffy dandelion,
and sneezes again - and
again.)
"AW! Come ON, Angel!
Gimme a BREAK!
Everybody knows you
guys got an IN!"
"Who's EVERYBODY?
So far, there's only like,
TWO of ya!"
"Yeah, but even the ANIMALS
know Who's BOSS! (Sneeze.)
And, like, you guys practically
have DINNER with Him!"
(Both mean, nasty lookin'
angels glance at each other,
and roll their eyes. One
of them hitches up his
white gauzy gown, with his
free hand. Earth's gravity is
playing havoc with the filmy material,
but the Lord has demanded
gauze for this Particular Occasion.)
"We don't think you've
GOTTEN it yet, Adam!
WE'RE the SERVANTS,
and HE'S the BOSS!
When are ya gonna get some
SMARTS, anyway?"
"Aw, come on GUYS!
(Sneeze. Scratch at
scrawny, hairy chest,
through the itchy animal
skin. A lone flea, something
not allowed in the Garden,
has suddenly found the
itchy animal skin, and
realizes that it's discovered
a loving home - and burrows in.)
"Uh UH!
Why don't ya talk 'ta
Him, YOURSELF?"
(Adam squints, and
looks up at the splendidly
sunny sky. Right over the
Garden, it's all sunny and
breezily fragrant. Just
two steps away, though,
it's dismally cloudy, and full 'a
somethin' that smells like......
a SKUNK? He shrugs;
does he even know what a
skunk SMELLS like?
Shaking his head, the only
part of him that doesn't
itch, Adam blows at
the friendly yet precocious
flea on his newly Made garment.
But like his puny pleas
to the mean, nasty lookin' angels,
his efforts prove to be futile.)
"What d'ya MEAN?
How am I supposed to do THAT?"
"HEY! How are WE gonna know?
Aren't you, like,
supposed to be SMARTER
than us?"
(Adam wipes his runny nose
with the back of his itchy
hand. By now, the flea has
crawled down the whole
length of his newly Made
garment, and settled down
for a nap. A really cute
lookin' lady flea suddenly
appears. The flea, before
so sleepy, suddenly wakes up,
and tries to look fleeingly manly.)
"Well........what do'ya think
I should SAY, fellas?
I mean, how should I START?"
(Both mean, nasty lookin'
angels now turn to one
another. They give each
other a very wise look. The
more extroverted one,
the one whose gauzy gown
fits better, and doesn't
keep slipping down, now
speaks again to the funny
lookin', extremely uncomfortable
lookin', runny-nosed man.)
"Well........this I gotta say,
Adam: get on your knees.....
(Sigh.)
(Shift real heavy torch to
other hand.)
.....and start GROVELING."
***************************
In my distress
I called upon
the Lord;
to my God
I cried for help.
From His temple
He heard my voice,
and my cry
to Him
reached His ears.
[Psalms 18:6]
