We go to the gas station to get our vehicles filled up with fuel so that they will run at peak performance. The station offers many different grades of fuel plus diesel. We must choose which works the best in our vehicle. If we have a gas engine, we must determine which grade makes ours run properly. We wouldn’t put diesel in our gas engine or gas in our diesel engine. None of us likes going down the road with a substandard fuel that causes our vehicle to sputter, miss, or die.

Here is then the scenario. We are told that it is the spirit that gives to us life (2 Cor 3:6), and they that are in the flesh cannot please God (Romans 8:8). The word flesh means in our mind. God has given us the opportunity or choice to either be in the flesh or in the spirit. It is not an automatic thing that once we are saved we are automatically walking and drawing from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is now dwelling in us yet we still as an act of our choice, yield to Him. Philippians 2:5 states, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”. This scripture indicates that we must “let” or allow the mind of Christ. We do not automatically have it. By the way, the mind of Christ is God’s mind in Jesus, not Jesus’ mind. Jesus laid down his mind, will, and desires as He said that He came to do God’s will not his own. Jesus had to make a choice to do God’s will over His own. We must do the same thing. We must lay down our will also. So what does my original thought about fuel have to do with all this? Well, it’s pretty simple.

We must go to the gas station to get fuel. We must choose the right fuel to cause our vehicle to perform correctly. So, think of it this way. Instead of getting gas as fuel to operate on, we have two choices. We can either run our life on our flesh or by the Spirit. Often we just drive by the station (God) when He is available to empower us with His Spirit so that we may find life. Yet, unfortunately, we all don’t always stop at the station so we run out of fuel. My question now is: Why are we so particular about filling up our vehicle and with the right fuel, yet when it comes to us, we just walk on in the flesh (our natural mind), even though we have what is needed available to have real life? Could it be that maybe self is more important to us than God? It is according to God’s Word that it is ONLY the Spirit that gives to us life. So without yielding to the Holy Spirit and doing the things that will draw us into His presence, then what are we actually walking in. death? Here is a good scripture to always remember. Zechariah 4:6……”Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord”.
