Are you scared of anything? No doubt, there’s some creepy, slimy creature that you wished were extinct. How about God? Are you afraid of Him? I think we are and in a sense that we may not even realize.

John chapter 6 describes when Jesus walked on the water. Verse 19 reads, “…they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified.” (NIV) The disciples were struggling to row their boat across the Sea of Galilee one evening when Jesus drew near to them. I often wondered why they were scared. Surely, they recognized Jesus. Was it the miracle they were witnessing that left them afraid? I think they were confronted by His majesty and holiness as never before.

We are much like the disciples. When we sense the Presence of God, we get scared. Not so much as being afraid of Him, but fearful of what we might do and what others might think. I believe when we come into His very presence and are confronted with His holiness, we will be able to do nothing, but repent. This will be followed by unfettered praise and worship of Him. We won’t notice anyone, but God Himself. It is a place very few of us, if any, have been before. Often, it is our pride that prevents us from entering into this sacred place.

We must read verse 21 to find a promise. It states, “Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading.” (NIV) As a church, we need to invite God into our boat. He wants to reveal Himself to us in a totally new light. However, we must abandon our pride and seek His face in pure worship.

When we do this, an amazing thing happens. We are transported from our place of toil and struggle, to the place where He wants to take us, a place where we can abide in His Presence. Let us not be afraid to let God draw near.
