Freedom From the Law

Years ago, I was seeking understanding concerning the law and my responsibility according to the Word concerning it. The Holy Spirit taught me a lesson that maybe will help someone else.

When I lived in another state, every time I got into my car the Holy Spirit tugged on me to put on my seatbelt. Like most people, I wasn’t too thrilled about the idea. There was no law saying that I had too, yet the Holy Spirit kept insisting. I struggled with it for some time, but eventually gave in. I started wearing my seatbelt all the time and thought nothing of it. Then to my surprise a seatbelt law was enacted. I was required now by law to always wear a seatbelt.

This lesson taught me something very valuable. It gave me a freedom that I had not known that I could have. Even though I was a Christian, so many churches seemed to have a lot of things that were seemingly required of me to do to fit the mold. Not that the things by appearance were wrong, it was that there was a freedom that could come if done God’s way and not man’s. Let’s look at a few scriptures and then I will explain what the Lord taught me.


All scripture is quoted from the King James Version

Mt 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Ga 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Ro 10:4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

Joh 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

Ga 5:4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

Jesus did not do away with the law; he fulfilled it. When we walk or are led by the Holy Spirit, we are not under the law. Let me explain. In our flesh we know dwells no good thing. God says that in the flesh that we cannot please Him. The word flesh means carnal nature or mind. When we keep the law in our flesh, we are not pleasing God. Why is this so? God did not ask us to serve Him in the flesh. He asked us to serve him in the spirit. When we serve by the flesh, who gets the glory? We, not Him, do what is seemingly accomplished. We get the credit or glory, not God. Our works did not save us; we were saved by His grace alone. Since Jesus said that he didn’t do away with the law, then how did He fulfill it and where does that place our responsibility?

In my seatbelt story, let’s look at what really took place. The Holy Spirit initiated me to put on a seatbelt. I obeyed in obedience to His request, not because man’s law required it.
By my being led by the Spirit, I was not under the law, yet it was fulfilled. Every thing we do needs to be led by the Holy Spirit. This is the only time that God alone gets the glory. Many people probably started wearing a seatbelt after the natural man’s law was enacted. They did so however out of fear that they would get a ticket or fine. The Holy Spirit was not involved at all. They did it by the flesh. Here is an important statement to always remember. When the Holy Spirit asks us to do something, He always gives His ability to do it if we are obedient. It never requires our fleshly carnal strength to accomplish the task. Remember, in the flesh, we cannot please God. The real freedom comes as we realize that we depend on His leading and strength, not our own. Our job is to please Him, not man. When this becomes revelation, a freedom will come. We shouldn’t be religious; we just need to walk in a relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Being religious has us in bondage to the law. Being in a relationship gives us a freedom in the Spirit. It takes the pressure to perform away and we are able to walk, free indeed.

I don’t think that I did a very good job explaining on this article, but hopefully the message will come out clear and help people find a new freedom.

My favorite scripture is Zechariah 4:6…Not by might, Nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts….

If can learn to base our walk on this, a freedom will come as the weights of religion and performance of works will lift off of our shoulders. Hope this helped someone.
