The Election

I was watching a show on television where a panel of Christian ministers were discussing the state of the Church and also about the presidential candidates. I found that many great points were discussed, yet I wondered about a few things, which were not mentioned.

They told of the way that we vote for a candidate was choosing someone that stood for our ideals or desires. They mentioned about the idea about having only a Christian president. I tended to agree with them on many points. They said that it was not as important to have a Christian president as was whether or not they were conforming to the moral values that we want to see in our leadership. The one thing that they failed to mention, was our seeking the Lord as to His will on how a person should vote.

I had to think of something that I have believed for some time. Just because a person is a Born Again Christian, does not mean that they are following the leading of the Holy Spirit. Many Christians unfortunately are walking in the flesh. God says that this is not pleasing to Him. God did use a donkey to speak through as I remember. He can use anyone that he desires. I am also reminded of a poll or survey that was taken after the Bush/Gore election. The poll said that the Christian vote was about equally divided. It seems that we cancelled out each other. Here is my concern.

Does the Lord have someone that He desires to lead this nation? If so, would he lead one half of the Christians to vote one way and the other half to vote another? I see this as one problem. Are we not to be led by the spirit? Are we not told to have no division among us? Sometimes we get our own agenda in the way. What about God’s plan or agenda? Does this matter? What about who or what God wants? Does this matter? If it does matter then how do we go about finding out what it is? The first thing is that we must humble our self and give up our control. Does it really matter what we want or think? Are God’s ways and thoughts much higher than ours are? I firmly believe that because God’s blessing is poured out when brethren dwell in unity, that God would not have a split in the vote if we are all listening to him. Somehow we must get to the place that we desire God’s will more than our own. The Bible says that we are to seek to find, and ask so that it will be given. We are also told to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. We are also told in 2Ch 7:14, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Instead of us enhancing or building our own kingdom, shouldn't we really be considering His kingdom first?
