“Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood. And he said. Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time. And the water ran around about the altar; and he filled the trench also with water” (I Kings 18:33-35)

This was quite a display of God honoring someone who was faithful to Him. Elijah did the most impractical thing (to those who were watching) – to sow water in a season of drought.

Elijah was very careful in his preparation of the altar. He used 12 stones to signify the 12 tribes of Israel; he poured water over the wood and the sacrifice (the young bull); and he used 12 barrels of water (4 barrels each of 3 times). Also know that the prophets of Baal had prepared a similar altar and had prayed to their god all day with no response.

When Elijah stepped out in faith, God showed up and lit up the altar with fire and consumed it. Even the 12 barrels of water evaporated. Elijah sowed what was most precious to him – water that was scarce in that land (they were at the end of a 3-year drought). What he sowed in faith, he received in abundance not only for himself but also for his nation.

PRAYER
Father, we can step out in faith and sacrifice in order to receive in abundance. We may need to sacrifice in prayer, in giving, or in ministry to others. Help us hear exactly what you want us to do. Amen.
