I’m intrigued when I read passages in the Bible about people falling face down before God. Stories of revival where people weep and lie prostrate capture my attention. I have to admit the reason is mostly out of curiosity. This act of worship and reverence is quite foreign to me and I suspect the same could be said for many of you, as well. But should it be?

Typically, our worship services focus on the goodness and greatness of our God. His amazing love along with His sweet grace for us causes praises and songs to flow from our lips. While this facet of worship is fundamentally sound and needed, I think we often neglect to show reverent fear of God.

Perhaps we just can’t comprehend or fully grasp God’s supreme authority. Somehow, people of old seemed to understand how to show respect and honor to those in authority. They willingly offered their best to kings and leaders. And when they came before God Almighty, it was with fear and trembling that they did so often with their face in the dirt. They recognized their low position in relation to the Lord God.

Maybe we are consumed with self or apathy, not caring about righteousness. Possibly we do not regard sin as being totally detestable. Certainly, we are far too casual towards sin in our day and age. Do we not grasp that God cannot tolerate any sin? The Israelites saw this truth displayed whenever their wayward countrymen were struck down by a Holy God after an act of rebellion. They understood He held the keys to the life and death. Friends, know that God cannot look upon sin of any kind without His wrath breaking forth.

Throughout the book of Revelation, the constant theme is of praises to Jesus. Phrases such as, “Holy, Holy, Holy,” flow from the lips of the redeemed. I long to experience this aspect of worship. However, I’m not sure as to why, but maybe just to see my God in a brighter light or to experience in the depths of my being the holiness of my God.
