I would guess that many of you have not spent much time thinking about earthenware, but I had a few spare moments this past week and found myself contemplating the proverbial “jar of clay”. (Okay, it just might have been a slow day for this Indiana boy.)

Well, what insights can be gained from mud jars anyway? I believe there are at least three things. First, clay pottery was common, plain, ordinary. These vessels were not ornate or flashy. Clay was an everyday material, not like gold or silver, which were reserved for special occasions and purposes. The clay jars did not invoke illusions of being noble or regal. They were not deemed worthy for the extravagant events of the day.

Secondly, the earthen jars were readily available. Their purpose in life was to hold goods and thus, serve people. However, the jars could not fill themselves up- someone had to perform this task. The vessels could do nothing on their own, but were waiting for an opportunity to perform their intended function. They yearned to be of value to their owner.

Lastly, the clay jars were routinely utilized to store provisions, such as water, flour and oil. Food and water are necessary for people to survive. The appearance of the earthen pottery belied their life-giving contents- truly hidden and valued riches. Jars of clay fulfilled a purpose far greater than their ordinary form would suggest.

I hope the comparisons of the clay jars to us need little explaining. We are just common, everyday people, often overlooked by others. We, in and of ourselves, can do nothing apart from God. Yet, we must be willing, and yes, eager to be used by God. Then God can work through us and display His power in a mighty way to touch lost souls, to give life to the dead in spirit, to show the world His grace and love. I challenge you to live up to the high calling of the “jar of clay”.
