If you were given dirt, water and sunshine, and then were asked to fix something for dinner, what would you make? Well, you could whip up some mud pies, but you probably wouldn’t find many takers to feast on them. If you give those same ingredients to God, He could make a juicy watermelon, luscious strawberries or sweet grapes. He is pretty amazing, isn’t He?
Have you ever wondered how a plant takes dirt, water and sunshine and produces a fruit or a vegetable? How can peaches, bananas, carrots and corn all come from the same ingredients? I certainly don’t understand the process, but I know that without God it could not happen.
Our spiritual lives grow in a very similar fashion. We need the nutrients from the soil of God’s Word, the refreshing water of fellowship with God’s people and the life-giving sunshine of the Holy Spirit. We cannot grow spiritually without the presence of God in our lives.
Perhaps your church, along with mine, are experiencing a season of pruning- a time of being cut back in preparation for new growth. Maybe we have lost our focus on God and instead, have become fixated on the “shortcomings” of the church and its leaders. As a people, we have become quick to criticize and slow to compliment and encourage. This cannot be pleasing to God.
However, now is the time for us to sprout anew. In order for growth to come, we must consecrate ourselves unto God, seek His forgiveness and pray earnestly. I believe God is waiting on us. He is ready to bless us abundantly, but not before we have prepared our hearts and minds. I am exhorting you to seek God’s face through prayer, in order that God may turn our hearts fully to Him. Ask God to bless your church with unity of purpose, your leaders with wisdom and your Pastor with strength.
When we attempt to do God’s work by ourselves, our best efforts will yield only messy mud pies. But when we allow God Almighty to have complete control of us and allow Him to work through us, there will burst forth a delicious and bountiful harvest.
