One of the things that most of us have struggled with is a feeling of helplessness coupled with aloneness. At times, we can be so burdened that we think there is no way out of our situation, and even worse, that no one cares if we do or don’t. It is such a sinking and desperate feeling to think that you are alone to face life’s troubles. Having a sense of belonging and knowing that someone cares is vital in making it through the long, dark valleys.

Perhaps for this reason, God has placed a great importance on family. In our families, we can often find comfort, protection, encouragement and love. In times of trouble, our families rally around us in order to lift us up. Many of us may not have encountered what a family was designed to be, but we can still experience this warmth and joy. Indeed, through our spiritual family, we can find acceptance, security, support and concern that will enable us to endure our hardships.

A most profound truth is this: You belong to God’s family. Let that sink in deeply. The One who spoke and the universe appeared, the One who is and was and always will be, the One who authored life itself, calls you His own. The God who holds this world in His hands sees you as His child. He paid the ultimate price, so that you could be His son or daughter. You belong to Him.

Living in this generation can be difficult. Trials and tribulations of all sorts come our way. Consequences of our own bad choices haunt us and bring unbearable shame. People, even friends, can be harsh and stinging with their criticism. Our finances or lack of basic needs can consume our every waking moment. At times, there seems to be no help in sight and hope is all but gone. It is during these seasons that we need to know to whom we belong.

Child of God, know and understand this- you are God’s. Nothing in this world is better than belonging to Him and nothing can separate us from Him. Absolutely nothing. No matter what pain or circumstance you find yourself in, comfort can be found in knowing you are His. He is more than able to sustain you and deliver you. Belonging to God is the single greatest reality any human can ever have.

Take heart, my brothers and sisters, for we are His. Rejoice in this wonderful truth. “How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!” (1 John 3:1 NIV)
