Then the Roman Soldiers took him into the barracks of the palace, called out the entire palace guard, dressed him in a purple robe,and made a crown of long, sharp thorns and put it on his head. Then they saluted yelling,"Yea, King of the Jews!" And they beat him on the head with a cane, and spat on him, and went down on their knees to "worship" him. Mark 15:16-19 (TLB)

The Lord of All Creation, The Alpha and Omega, stood responseless while he was tortured and spit upon. There is almost nothing as insulting as being spit on. It is one the crudest of insults. But Jesus, the One who gave life to the ones that were mocking and torturing him, did nothing. Most men would be ready to fight if someone spit upon them. But The Messiah, the one who gives orders to the Sun and Moon, to the winds and tides, just stood there.

Why? The question screams out for an answer! Why did the only true King that ever walked the Earth allow himself to be humiliated by evil men? Why not call down fire from Heaven, leaving them in a pile of warm ashes? Or summon ten thousand warrior angels, all with flaming swords, killing the mockers and the crowds cheering them on? It is widely believed that the thorns pierced Jesus' skull, and may have actually entered a slight part of his brain. What reason could be good enough for God to allow himself to be mocked and humiliated?

YOU. Or more specifically, your eternal soul that carries on after the body dies. You see, God created man to have fellowship with Him. Scripture tells us we were created in his own image. How can a Father not love the son he created? But Adam stained the entire human race with original sin. Jesus came to restore us to a right relationship with God. That is why he suffered and why he was pierced.
