“For everyone who tries to honor himself shall be humbled, and he humbles himself will be honored.” Luke 14:11 (TLB)


In the Word we are warned against becoming too prideful. When King David became too prideful, he stepped away from God and reaped a bitter harvest. When evil King Belshazar had exhausted Jehovah’s patience, he died the same night that Daniel interpreted the writing on the wall. And who can forget King Agrippa, who got so full of himself he let people call him a god. The real God reacted immediately and a few days later, he was dead or, as Luke describes in Acts, “eaten by worms.” These Scriptures should be stored in the heart of every believer, with them understanding the consequences of serving the Master with anything other than humility.


We have all known or worked with someone that has done everything faster, better, and bigger than everybody else. Every office contains at least one of these people. If you are lucky, it is just a co-worker, and if you are unlucky, it’s your boss. These are the folks so puffed up with self-importance that everything they say or do comes out arrogant, obnoxious, or both. They seem to think they have been chosen as God’s second in command and might even fill in occasionally for the Father.


Why are we warned against pride and arrogance? Because when we get all puffed up about what we have accomplished “on our own”, it is easy to forget to honor our Creator for our achievements. We selfishly refuse to share the credit with our Master. We are warned about pride, then, because it will affect our walk with Him and can lead us to think we don’t even need Him anymore. Large, high profile, Christian Ministries have fallen when the devil succeeded in inflating the Pastors with pride, then laughing as their ministries crashed and burned... Beelzebub’s most utilized tools surely must be arrogance and pride.


There is no greater example of humility than Jesus washing the disciple’s feet. Our Deliverer, Messiah, and King got down on his hands and knees on a dirty floor to do a menial task most often done by the lowest ranking servant in a home. The message should be crystal clear, the Lord wants us to serve with an attitude of humility, and not be self-glorifying, full of arrogance and conceit. This is true servant leadership.


The Holy Lamb left His honored position in heaven at the right hand of Jehovah, set aside His royal privileges, and came to earth to die for us. He came to pay OUR penalty, to take OUR whippings, and serve OUR justly deserved death sentence. He modeled the loving servant behavior He wants us to have, being humble even to the point of death. By remembering what He did for us, we can humbly serve Him.
