Faith
For God sent the Son into the world,
not to condemn the world,
but that the world might be saved
through Him.
[John 3:17]

"Lord, I like all the rain You're
bringing us, but...."
"But what, child?"
"Well, it's making my lawn
grow too fast. Come
Monday, I'll probably get another one
of those threatening
letters from the homeowner's association."
[SMILE.]
"That's not really what
I wanted to talk to You,
about, Lord."
[NOD.]
"It's Wednesday night, Lord.
This Bible study........"
"I know."
"I'm, like, on a different wave length
than those guys, Lord. They're
really Christian; and, I'm not.
I hate being different, Lord."
"So, you've told Me, child."
"I guess it's too late to stop
being Jewish, huh, Lord."
"Yes, little one."
"Oy, Lord! Please! I ain't so little: not in years or pounds!
Anyhow, these Christians talk about being saved, a lot."
"Yes, child. I know."
"They talk about it like it's the
most important thing in the world."
"It is, mein kindelah."
(Smile.)
"It's all just......a bit much, Lord."
"Good. It should be."
"You know what I mean, Lord!
Like, last night they even talked about
being able to tell if somebody was
saved or not. That seemed a bit.....odd,
Lord. The thought just never
occurred to me - ever. Like, never."
[NOD.]
"Once in a while, I look at somebody,
and wonder if they mow their lawn,
or pay somebody, like I do."
[SOLEMN NOD.]
"If I'm in a really inquisitive mood,
I think about who's their favorite
contestant on American Idol, Lord.
But, that's about it.
(Thoughtful silence.)
Okay; I do wonder if they're a cat,
or a dog person."
"Ah. Of great importance, daughter."
"Oh, I agree, Lord!"
(Silence.)
[SILENCE.]
"So, nu? What do I do with this new
word in my life, Lord?"
"Which word is that, beloved."
"Well, it's not 'mow'; that's for -
eh, darn sure."
[SMILE.]
This weird thing, called 'saved', Lord; what
am I supposed to do with it?"
"Study My Word, child."
"Yeah, but......."
"Then, study It, again."

For by grace you have been saved
through faith,
and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God,
not of works,
lest anyone should boast.
[Ephesians 2:8-9]
