Through The Eyes of Jesus

Take a journey with me, if you will, in your mind. Let’s go back to the days when our Lord walked the earth. Try to imagine seeing humanity through His eyes.

I read an article earlier today that really touched me. It talked about how we, as Christians are always claiming to want to be more like Jesus. So let’s think about that for a moment.

What do you think He saw when he looked at us? At the people of that day, in Jerusalem? Remember, He was fully God in the human form of a man. The depravation of sin must have scorched His eyes and burned His heart with sorrow. He lived among liars, thieves, murderers, rapists, and all the human depravity that we live among today. Yet, He was sinless. In His deity - how could He stand it? How could He stand us?

I am going to be bold here and say that Jesus, as the very Son of God must have seen nothing but death when He looked at us. In His deity He knew past, present and future. He left the realms of the heaven where He fellowshipped with the Father for a span of time that we will never comprehend in this life. He was used to walking on streets of gold, of having the angels worship at His feet. He had the love of the Father constantly. He left that glory to come down to the degradation of mankind.

When He walked the streets of Jerusalem and the shores of Galilee, when the people pressed on Him from every side, He must have even smelled their death, smelled our death. He must have seen all the sins they and we have ever committed literally in His mind and heart; like a horror movie playing over and over. Yet, He loved us enough to die for us. How could that be?

Think about Him looking on someone such as Barabas; who was set free in His stead. Do you think He saw the worms eating away at millions of decomposed bodies in the grave at that very moment? Did He see me - some two thousand years later in a godless grave for eternity, wailing and moaning and being tormented day and night? I know that all sounds pretty horrific, but He must have seen us that way! I submit that He must have literally seen the ugliest, filthiest, most wretched form of evil that we could ever imagine when He looked at us. Think about your worst nightmare as a child - the evil, hideous monsters that invaded your dreams and caused you to wake in a terrified, shaking cold sweat. Those monsters are us in the eyes of the Holy God. Yet, He loved us and took all that upon himself, in human form. I ask again, how could that be?

How could He have stood there and taken our punishment without a word in His own defense? He never deserved it. He was Holy God, incapable of sin. Could I have taken that punishment? Never! Could you? I don’t think so. How can anyone on this earth have ever doubted that He is the Son of God?

No human could ever endure forty days and nights in the wilderness without food or water. Forty days! Can you even imagine that? I cannot. He had nothing there but the angels ministering to Him after satan tempted Him unmercifully. Yet, He did not sin. He had no blanket, no pillow to lay His head, no clean clothes, no food, no water to wash with or to drink; nothing.

No human could ever go through life without so much as a little white lie, or gossiping, or unclean thoughts and actions. No human could ever be spat upon, mocked and ridiculed, beaten unrecognizable, have thorns pierce their forehead, have their feet and hands nailed to a cross for the sins of the world! Then say “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” Think about it. Still want to be more like Jesus?

Oh God, forgive me. I can never attain to be anywhere near Who You are. But God, please help me to be better - to be more forgiving, to love my neighbors and see them as you saw them. To accept everyone just as they are, as You did. Not just my sisters and brothers in You, but all the people I come in contact with. God help me…..to show them You, in love. You are my Savior and I worship and love you with every fiber of my being. Keep this love flowing continuously in me everyday of my life on earth. In Jesus name, I pray.
