Herod had John shut up in prison for having spoken against the sin present in his (Herod's) life. It is ironic that he put John into prison, hoping to silence his reproof when Herod himself was the one in prison, a prison of his own guilty conscience. If he hadn't a sense of guilt then John's reproving words would have slid right past him.
He sought to quiet the voice that could have prompted him to take the steps necessary to secure freedom from his prison of guilt and condemnation. John pointed to Jesus Christ, the only One with the key that unlocks guilt's prison door and sets us free. In his effort to still the voice of conviction Herod thought he was free to continue his life of sin but sadly his chains bound him more securely with each passing day.
