Strength for the Journey

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1) I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart; wait, I say, on the Lord. (Psalm 27:13,14)

   Verse 14 of this psalm follows a personal testimony of the psalmist in verse 13, in which he says that he would have fainted (lost heart, been defeated,and rendered useless) unless he, by faith, had kept his heart centered on the goodness of the Lord. Centered, even though all around him was that which sought to disrupt this focus.

So he admonishes the reader in verse 14 to "wait on the Lord" - looking to him; trusting him with the overseeing and outcome, and to "be of good courage". He says that the result will be a strengthening and fortification of the heart by the Lord "he shall strengthen thine heart". Then again he repeats for emphasis, "wait, I say, on the Lord".

These are not idle, philosphical ramblings - the psalmist lived these truths and did not faint because this was where he derived strength. Take courage, for in the land of the living is our living Lord who delights to show himself strong on our behalf.
